Clients of mine have recently experienced a fire that originated in their garage. In fact, most people, do not have a smoke detector in their garage. Activities in the garage and exhaust from vehicles can make them problematic.

The lack of fire prevention in the garage costs billions in property damage every year. Technology has solved this problem!

According to FEMA;

“A heat alarm — not a smoke alarm — in your garage. The heat alarm will sound if the temperature rises too high. Learn more about what type of heat alarm is best for garage installation at”

Heat alarms or heat sensors detect the temperature instead of the presence of smoke. I was made aware of the existence of these heat sensors by my friend Leroy Santiago of Global Security. The heat sensors can hook into the alarm system and call the fire department if the sensor is triggered.

According to the Global Security site;

“Most fire-related deaths occur between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when the majority of people are asleep. Of all fire-related deaths, 85% occur in home fires. And if no one is at home or a person is trapped and can’t get to the phone, a non-monitored smoke alarm will be of little use.

Global’s smoke alarm system and heat communicators are always monitored, whether your system is armed or not. Monitored fire detection systems also allow firefighters to be dispatched, even if you’re away from home or sound asleep…

Heat communicators, also known as heat sensors, detect high ambient heat in areas such as a furnace room, kitchen or laundry room – places where smoke detectors cannot be used. These devices can provide early warning …”
